Abstract

829,285. Frames for doors and windows. AUSTIN, F. B. May 25, 1956 [May 25, 1955; July 21, 1955], Nos. 15109/55 and 21167/55. Class 20(3) [Also in Group XIV] A front frame, e.g. for a fitted cupboard in a domestic building, comprises two stiles 1, 2, carpet and frieze rails 3, 4 and a top rail 5, all of which are of the section shown in Fig. 2. The carpet and frieze rails 3, 4 are connected by mortice and tenon joints 6, 7, the top rail 5 having end grooves 10 which slidingly engage tongues 11 on the inner sides of the stiles. The length of the stiles 1, 2 is preferably equal to, or slightly greater than, the design maximum for the type of building for which the frame is designed. During the initial assembly of the frame the top rail 5 is slid between the stiles 1, 2 and secured in the desired position, the space between the top and frieze rails 5, 4 being fitted e.g. with a hardboard panel 12. A door 8 is hinged to each of the stiles 1, 2. In a modification all of the frame members are formed of the section shown in Fig. 4. The upper rear face of each stile is reduced at 21, each end of the top rail 17 being slotted and cut to provide tongues 22, 23 to fit into recesses 18, 21 respectively in the corresponding stile. The top rail may be slid along the stiles to a degree depending upon the length of the reduced portions 21.
