Abstract
828,300. Cables. PYROTENAX Ltd. March 12, 1956, No. 7709/56. Class 36. In an apparatus for the manufacture of a metal-sheathed, powder-insulated cable in which the powder is fed into the sheath tube behind the head of a ram within the tube and is compressed by relative reciprocations of the tube and ram, the feed of powder to the tube behind the ram head is governed by a valve controlled by a relay operated in accordance with the relative reciprocations of the tube and ram so that feed of powder into the tube is substantially prevented during that period of the reciprocation cycle when the powder is being compressed. As shown applied to the apparatus described in Specifications 669,779, 669,780 and 669,781, powder is fed into the hollow ram F from hoppers M carried by the ram. The flow of powder from the hoppers to the ram is governed by plunger valves N, each driven by a doubleacting piston and cylinder N<SP>1</SP>, N2. The fluid supply to the cylinders N<SP>2</SP>, via the pipes P<SP>8</SP>, P<SP>9</SP>, is controlled by a piston P<SP>1</SP> sliding within a casing P<SP>2</SP> having an inlet port P<SP>3</SP> for the fluid supply and two exhaust ports P<SP>5</SP>. The piston P<SP>1</SP> is operated by a trip arm Q pivoted to the casing P<SP>2</SP> and actuated by a projecting lug Q<SP>1</SP> on the reciprocating ram cylinder E, a spring Q2 being provided to bias the piston to the position shown. During downward travel of the ram cylinder, the lug Q<SP>1</SP> rides past the trip arm Q and the piston P<SP>1</SP> remains in the upward position. The pipe P<SP>8</SP> is thus connected to the fluid supply and the plungers N are positioned by their pistons N<SP>1</SP> to prevent powder feed from the hoppers to the ram. At a point in upstroke of the ram cylinder, the lug Q<SP>1</SP> pivots the trip arm Q to depress the piston P<SP>1</SP> and so connect the pipe P<SP>9</SP> to the fluid supply thus causing withdrawal of the plungers N and allowing feed from the hoppers to the ram. The lug Q<SP>1</SP> then moves past the trip arm Q thus releasing the piston P<SP>1</SP> and so causing forward movement of the plungers N which drives the powder charge into the ram and cuts off further feed from the hoppers. Each cylinder N<SP>2</SP> is closed by a screw-threaded cap N<SP>4</SP> so that the positions of associated plunger N at the end of the backward stroke (and therefore the quantity of powder entering the ram) can be varied by rotating the cap. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the valve controlling the fluid supply to the cylinders N<SP>2</SP> is also the valve controlling the supply of fluid to the ram cylinder.
