Abstract

1,125,755. Percussive tools. VICKERS Ltd. 22 April, 1966 [23 April, 1965], No. 17350/65. Heading B4C. An hydraulically-actuated percussive tool comprises a doubleacting piston 3 reciprooable by means of pressurized liquid such as oil, under the control of a slide valve 2 and an hydraulic spring 19 operating on the same liquid used for actuating the piston, the liquid being compressed by a member 18 thereby storing energy which is subsequently imparted by the member to the piston to assist its forward stroke. The valve 2 is in the form of a sleeve slidable in the housing I of the tool and the piston 3 is connected to a hammer 59 adapted to strike the end of a tool bit (66, Fig. 1). In operation, assuming the piston to be in the position shown, upon opening a valve 33 by means of a trigger 37, pressurized oil is fed from an inlet 31 through a chamber 38, a duct 42 and ports 79 in the sleeve into a chamber 12 thereby moving the piston forward on its working stroke; the pressure on the piston is additionally increased by means of pressurized oil in a chamber 19 (constituting the hydraulic spring) acting on the piston via the member 18. At the end of its working stroke the hammer strikes the tool bit, the piston then being in such a position that the ports 83 in the sleeve are uncovered, thereby allowing oil to flow from a chamber 15b, passage 22 and ports 23 in the piston and through a, duct 48 to act on the end of the sleeve. The sleeve then moves so as to close off the flow of pressurized oil to the chamber 12, the latter then being opened to exhaust via ports 79 in the sleeve. Pressurized oil now flows into a chamber 9 via, a groove 45 in the housing and ports 80 in the sleeve thereby moving the piston upwardly on its return stroke. During this stroke the member 18 acts as a piston and compresses the liquid in the chamber 19 thereby storing energy for the next working stroke.
