Abstract

1,098,288. Percussive tools. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Nov. 18, 1966 [Nov. 19, 1965], No. 49304/65. Heading B4C. A percussive tool comprises two working pistons 4, 104 reciprocable in cylinders 2, 102 under the control of a main valve 49, a pilot valve 16, 116 associated with each cylinder and arranged to be opened by movement of the piston during its working stroke, to cause the other piston to perform its return stroke and to be closed by movement of the piston during its return stroke which movement, after closure of the pilot valve, causing movement of the main valve from one operative position to the other operative position. The pistons are adapted to strike, via anvils 21, 121, the shanks 33, 133 of tools such as picks 34, 134. In operation with the main valve in the position shown, a pressurized fluid is fed, via an inlet port 41 controlled by manually-actuated valves 42, ports 44, 113 into the cylinder 102 thereby driving the piston 104 downwardly. The pressurized fluid also flows via a port 116, adjustable restrictor 57, passage 55, port 15 into the cylinder 2 thereby returning the piston 4, the fluid on the opposite of the latter piston being exhausted via port 16, an adjustable restrictor 56, passage 54, ports 46, 45; the speed of the return depends upon the setting of the restrictors. When the piston 4 closes the port 16 (constituting the pilot valve) fluid is trapped in a cylinder space 12 thereby increasing the pressure so that the valve 49 is moved to its other position. The movement of the two pistons is then reversed. At the end of each working stroke fluid is trapped in chambers 4, 114 after the pistons have closed the ports 15, 115 thereby acting as a damper.
