Abstract
764,486. Extruding concrete pipes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 20, 1955 [Jan. 20, 1954], No. 1762/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups X, XXVIII and XXIX] A pump for wet concrete &c. in the plastic state comprises a tube 11 having an inlet 14 at one end and the other end open to serve as an outlet to a receiver such as a hose 20, means such as a double acting ram 25 to reciprocate the tube 11 slowly on the working stroke by hydraulic fluid from a reservoir 32 kept under pressure by a pump 33 and rapidly on the return stroke by compressed air from a cylinder 37 when a poppet valve 36 on the liquid side of the ram piston 27 has been opened. Concrete mix is stored in a hopper 13 open at its lower part to the tube 11 and provided with a torque 21 fitting the tube and preventing reverse movement of the concrete. As the piston 27 moves the tube 11 forwards an arm 55 on its piston rod 28 moves a connecting rod 43 forwards so that an arm 50 thereon compresses a spring 51 surrounding a rod 44 until the spring is sufficiently compressed to free the rod from a detent 45 and move it to a second detent position 46 whereupon it strikes the stem 41 of the valve 36 opening the valve and permitting the compressed air to return the piston and tube so rapidly that the tube is jerked away from its concrete content leaving it behind. The effect may be accentuated by widening the bore of the tube 11 at its outer end. Flow of the concrete may be facilitated by introducing water through a pipe 61 ahead of the tube 11 and withdrawing it further along as the mass passes through a perforated portion of the hose 20 surrounded by a vacuum chamber 64. To adapt the device for an extrusion operation, a central core may be introduced into the tube 11 and may be reciprocated therewith.
