Abstract

1,112,967. Compressing gases: hydraulic intensifiers. REXALL DRUG & CHEMICAL CO. July 21, 1965 [July 22, 1964], No.31077/65. Headings F1N and F1P. A double acting pumping unit comprises small area high pressure pistons 51a and 51b reciprocable for compressing fluid (including certain liquids) into a conduit 57 by large area pistons A, B connected thereto and alternately supplied through lines 36, 44 with hydraulic fluid having a pressure which is momentarily increased at the beginning of each compression stroke. The hydraulic fluid is supplied by a pump 3 to a line 34 connected through a reversing valve 35 to the lines 36, 44 and containing a variable orifice valve 8 across which is connected a differential pressure regulating device 14 arranged to maintain a pressure level P2 upstream of the valve 8 and a lower pressure P1 downstream of the valve 8. A second differential pressure regulating device 15 is arranged to receive hydraulic fluid discharged from the valve 8 through a line 18 and to charge an accumulator 23 to a pressure P3 mid way between the pressures P1 and P2. When one of the large area pistons A, B reaches the end of a compression stroke a microswitch MA or MB is actuated to cause operation of the solenoid operated reversing valve 35 to thus supply P1 pressure to the other large area piston to initiate a compression stroke in the opposite direction. The resulting fall in the P1 pressure operates a pressure switch 37 to cause a solenoid valve 30 to changeover whereby the P2 and P3 pressures are connected to the line 34 through non-return valves 29, 29a to momentarily augment the P1 pressure supply until the pressure switch 37 operates to close the solenoid valve 30.
