Abstract

924,278. Free piston engines cycles. H. JANICKE. July 29, 1960 [Aug. 4, 1959], No. 26540/60. Class 7(2) In a free-piston engine, the engine cylinder is supplied with gas by means of supply conduit means 18 and inlet orifice means 105 after scavenging orifice means and exhaust orifice means 106 in the engine cylinder have been closed, a gas reservoir 3 being provided between the inlet orifice means and the gas supply conduit means, the gas reservoir comprising a movable valve body 5 controlling the connection from the gas supply conduit means to the gas reservoir and between the gas reservoir and inlet orifice means respectively so that at each time only one of the connections is effective for supplying gas the position of the valve body being positively controlled in accordance with the position of the engine pistons and the gas reservoir being so dimensioned that its volume corresponds to the gas quantity needed for each single power stroke of the engine. As shown the connection between the reservoir 3 and the engine cylinder 1 is kept closed by -the extension 6 until the piston extension 7 has completely closed the bore 110. The relief valve 118 may be influenced by a control pulse e.g. by the supply pressure or the induction pressure or the filling or charging pressure of the collector of the compressors. Alternatively the controlling may be done by varying the valve actuating time. The valve body 5 is controlled from the synchronizing mechanism 20 by means of an hydraulic pump 14 and operating plunger 12. The plunger 15 of the pump 14 may be rotated for control purposes. The compression pressure may be used for varying the gas quantity.
