Abstract
A regulating device for a free piston internalcombustion engine including means for reducing the feed of fuel to the engine when the free piston tends to move beyond a dead centre limit position comprises a rod 2 positively driven by the free piston and co-operating with a chamber 51 filled with a liquid and terminating in a cavity in axial alignment with the rod and of a diameter substantially equal to that of the rod. The cavity is so positioned that the rod enters it only when the free piston tends to move beyond a theoretically optimum dead centre position. Means 53 responsive to the overpressure produced in the cavity when the rod penetrates into the cavity operates a part 15 capable of reducing the amount of fuel fed to the internal-combustion engine on the next stroke of the free piston. The piston 7 of the free piston engine may be connected with the piston of a hydraulic pump connected through a closed circuit with a hydraulic motor so as to form a hydraulic transmission. As shown the rod may be constituted by the piston of the hydraulic pump. The power delivered by the hydraulic motor may be adjusted by varying by means of a pedal 50 the pressure of gas supplied from a source M Fig. 1 (not shown). A holding chamber is connected to each of the cylinders of the hydraulic pump so as to receive a variable portion of the liquid delivered.
