Class 7(2) The gases delivered and compressed during the first compression stroke of the machine are discharged into a space of restricted volume 18. The spring 28 is chosen so that the valve 24 is kept closed during the first compression stroke. During the following compression strokes the pressure inside the space 18 increases and the valve 24 is opened. As the pressure in the space 18 increases the return power applied to the compressor piston increases. The compression rate in the accumulator cylinder 16 is normally lower than that in the compression cylinder 6 but the space 17 being completely closed owing to the pressure of valve 41 during the first stroke in the direction of the arrow f, the pressure inside the space 17 is greater than that prevailing in the cylinder 6 when the moving parts reach the outer dead centre. The injection pump 14 and a needle valve 35 are conjointly controlled by a regulator 33 connected to the compressed air reservoir 20. Air losses in the accumulator space 17 are made up by air supplied through a valve 41 when the pistons are at their inner dead centre position. With increase in delivery after starting the quantity of fuel injected increases and simultaneously the needle valve 35 is opened more. Owing to this the pressure in the accumulator space 17 also increases. A cock 48 is provided for releasing the pressure in the space 18.
