Abstract

855,173. Fuel injection pumps. MUNTZ& CO. Ltd., A. July 22, 1957 [July 31, 1956], No. 23646/56. Class 7(3). [Also in Group XXVIII] The fuel injection pump 16 of a supercharged engine is actuated by combustion chamber pressure supplied to one side of the pump piston 13, the other side being subjected to a pressure which increases' as the supercharge pressure increases. The pump plunger 16 is connected to the piston 13 which is subjected to cylinder pressure through a pipe 14, the lower side of the piston being loaded by scavenging air pressure in a crank-shaft engine, the air reservoir pressure in a free piston gas generator, or, as shown in Fig. 1, the maximum pressure in the cushion of a free-piston engine which is applied through a passage 31 with a non-return valve 32 therein. The pump delivery pipe 23 is connected to an accumulator 34 the plunger 41 of which is loaded by a constant gas pressure applied at 39 and the downward movement of the piston is cushioned by liquid trapped therebelow when the piston covers the outlet port 43. The inlet port is provided with a non-return valve 44 and the fuel stored in the accumulator on each delivery stroke of the pump is delivered to the injector as the pump stroke ends. The pump delivery is controlled by an eccentric 28 controlling the time of closing of the inlet valve 19 actuated through a lever 27 by the pump piston 16. In a modification the pump actuating piston 13 is formed as a differential piston with a larger lower area than the upper area on which cylinder pressure acts and in a further modification the bottom of the accumulator cylinder is directly open to the pipe 23, the travel of plunger 41 being limited by a pile of spring washers. Specification 628,132 is referred to.
