[Class 8 (i)] Water &c. is injected into the compressor part of a free-piston compressor or motive gas producer in quantity dependent on the length of the piston stroke and in some cases also on the feed or delivery pressure. Fig. 1 shows a compound free-piston compressor in which a cam 6 on a piston-rod extension actuates a pump 8 supplying water to a sprayer 9 in the low-pressure discharge conduit 4. In a modification, a pump with a chamber of variable volume delivers liquid to an injection valve opened at the end of the suction stroke and held open by the liquid pressure. Fig. 4 shows a liquid pump 7 actuated by a piston-rod extension through a lever acting on a rod 15 inclined to a degree variable in accordance with a delivery pressure acting on a device 19. The time of starting the injection is variable in accordance with the air feed pressure acting on a piston 24 to control the pivot 18 of the lever 16. In a modification, thermostatically and pressure actuated bellows may act conjointly through a lever system on the rod 15.
