Abstract

669,781. Cable-making machines. PYROTENAX, Ltd. Aug. 4, 1950 [Aug. 19, 1949], No. 21637/49. Class 36. An apparatus for the manufacture of an electric cable of the type in which a metal sheath is separated from one or more conducting cores by pulverulent insulating material comprises means for feeding powdered insulating material to the interior of a sheath tube, a ram within the sheath tube, means for imparting relative longitudinal movement to the ram and the sheath tube so that the ram is moved into contact with the powder within the sheath, and a percussion device for subjecting the ram or the sheath to one or more longitudinal blows during the period it is in contact with the powder. The apparatus described in Specifications 669,779 and 669,780 is provided with a percussion device such as a pneumatic hammer L which is connected to the base of the ram-driving device E. Striker L<SP>3</SP> acts on the upper end of ram F through shock absorbers F<SP>4</SP>. Spring L<SP>4</SP> between the hammer L and ram F holds the two apart during the main reciprocating movement of the ram but yields when the ram comes into contact with the powder in the sheath, thus causing the striker L<SP>3</SP> to impart blows to the ram during the period of contact.
