Abstract
706,371. Cables. GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. Jan. 16, 1953 [Jan. 18, 1952], No. 1512/5'2. Class 36 A metal-sheathed, powder insulated conductor is made by assembling the conductor 15 within a metal tube 5, supporting the tube by a tapering reducing die 6,' reciprocating a ram head 2 longitudinally within the tube and feeding powdered or granular insulation to the front of the ram, so that blows from the ram first compress the powder beneath it and then drive the tube with its contents through the die, thereby reducing the tube diameter. The ram head 2 is carried by a hollow plunger 1 and has radially extending ribs 3 forming grooves 4 between them. The conductor 15 passes through the hollow plunger 1 and ram head 2 to the bottom ot tube 5, the lower end of which is then swaged down to pass through die 6, and closed with a plug. The upper end of plunger 1 is connected to the piston rod 9 of piston 10 working within a pneumatic cylinder as described in Specification 693,937. Each time the ram rises insulating powder is fed from hopper 8, through the space between the plunger and the tube 5 and through grooves 4 to the underside of head 2. The fall of the ram compresses the powder beneath it and then drives the tube through the die 6. Lubricant may be applied between the tube and the die.
