Abstract

609,158. Extruding. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., HANCOCK, D. C., and LORCH, H. R. March 7, 1946, No. 7118. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Groups V and XXXVI] A method of applying an insulating covering and a lead sheath to an electric cable comprises extruding the lead sheath around the conductor and filling the space between the conductor and the sheath with liquid thermoplastic material, the whole assembly being finally solidified by cooling. The lead is supplied from a lead press having a vertical container 11 and a ram 22. A die block 12 is fitted into the wall of the container 11 and has a cylindrical passage 13, in the outer end of which is a disc which is centrally apertured to form a die 14 and which is held in place by a tubular die holder 15. Co-operating with the outer die 14 is an inner die 16 carried on the end of point holder 17. The point 16 and point holder 17 are supported by a spider 21. The ram 22 forces plastic lead from the container 11 along the passage 13 and through the annular orifice 23 between the dies 14 and 16 to form a lead tube. The conductor passes through the point 16 and is positioned centrally within the lead tube, liquid thermoplastic being forced between them. The assembled cable passes along the cooling tube 3 in which oil circulates, the oil serving to cool the cable and counteract the internal pressure on the lead sheath.
