Abstract

1,136,344. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 2 Nov., 1967 [8 Nov., 1966], No. 49890/66. Heading H1A. For solid-filling the interstices of a multiconductor cable with a non-hardening jelly-like substance 1 contained in a reservoir 2, rams 5 actuated by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders 4 force members 6 on to piston 3 which prevents air entering 2 as substance 1 is forced by a pump 8 via a distribution pipe 82 into extrusion dies, such as 322 mounted on or adjacent to means for laying-up one or more layers of the conductors 41 of at least one said cable. The bunched cable 42 is fed into die 322 and the jelly coated cable 43 is then fed to a scraping die 323 for removal of excess jelly and compaction. The sized cable 44 if of the requisite number of conductors is then fed to a taping head 324. Each die has a tapered orifice pointing in the direction of cable travel so that it imparts an axial velocity to substance 1 in the directioin of cable travel, thereby assisting penetration and lowering the frictional drag of the cable through the die.
