Abstract
745,726. Extruding cable sheathings. FIELDING & PLATT, Ltd. July 8, 1953 [Jan. 18, 1952], No. 1538/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of applying a multi-core cable sheathing 7, 8 to an electric cable core 1 coprises passing the core through a plurality of axially spaced extrusion chambers 2, each provided with an extrusion die 3, and extruding material through said dies and around the core, at least one of the extrusion chambers comprising two or more billet containers 4 whose axes are at right angles to the axis of the core, the billets 6 in the separate containers being extruded in succession. The first extrusion chamber may be fed with the extrusion material 6 by a screw 9 and the second extrusion chamber may have a pair of opposed containers 4 with hydraulic rams 5. Alternatively the first extrusion chamber may also have a pair of opposed billet containers with rams, Fig. 1 (not shown). The core 1 may first be covered with an insulation which may be applied by extrusion or may be wound helically around the core. The layer 7 which may consist of aluminium or aluminium alloy is then applied. This layer is then preferably covered with a layer of rubber which may be applied by extrusion or may be wound helically on the layer; the rubber is then cured. A final layer 8 of copper or copper alloy is then applied.
