Abstract

1,216,342. Jointing by forging; drawing. CCL SYSTEMS Ltd. 6 Sept., 1968 [8 Sept., 1967], No. 41143/67. Headings B3H and B3P. A tubular fitting 10 is fixed to the end of a cable 11 by forcing the fitting through a doubletapered die 24 by relative movement of the die and fitting. The die is detachably mounted in a housing 23 by a grub screw 25. The housing is fixed to an apertured plate 20 which is connected to the cylinder 13 of an hydraulic piston cylinder assembly 12 by four tie rods 21. The taper of the die is preferably 7 degrees and may be up to 10 degrees. A guide bush 28 is fitted over the die and has a tubular portion (31), Fig. 4 (not shown), for a plunger 33. The plunger 33 has a recess 34 to receive the cable end and is pushed by the piston 14 to force the fitting through the die. The die is reversible so that the two tapered portions can be used in succession. The fitting comprises a sleeve (36), Fig. 5 (not shown), and an insert (38). The insert has at least two longitudinal slots (39) and is internally knurled.
