Abstract

[Also in Division F2] Apparatus for prestressing a single rod, wire or cable comprises a central hollow elongate body portion 9 carrying a main jack 120 at one end, and an auxiliary jack 10 at the other end, together with a longitudinal rod or, as shown, tube 7, which is attached to the end of the rod. As shown, the stressing element 2 is wedged into an annular block 4 having a recess 8 in which the end of the tube 7 is positioned. A nut 15 on the tube transmits the prestressing force from the annular piston 13 of the main jack 120 to the element via the block 4, and a second nut 16 is tightened against a transom 20 of the body portion to retain the stress, the jack 120 is retracted, and the first nut tightened against the jack again; this sequence is repeated until the required tension is achieved, whereupon the annular piston 11 of the auxiliary jack 10 is actuated to drive home an anchoring device. In the alternative embodiment (Figs. 2-4, not shown), the end of the stressing element is wedged into an annular connector 60; into the other end of which a rod 55 is screwed, thereby clamping the three-segment wedge 62 against the stressing element. In this embodiment a modified, but similar form of auxiliary jack is employed.
