Abstract

1,088,143. Moulding spark plug insulators. A. RUPRECHT and D. VON DER OSTEN. Feb. 11, 1965 [Feb. 13, 1964], No. 5887/65. Heading B5A. In an automatic process for making a sparkplug insulator, ceramic composition is introduced from a filling shoe into the stepped bore 14 of a sleeve 6 flush with a table 7 closed at its lower end by a stationary bottom ram 15 supporting a pressing needle 16. The shoe then moves to the right and an upper ram 5 having a cavity 19 corresponding to the shape of the end of the insulator, descends into the sleeve until its lower edge is at a distance equal to the length of the collar 2 of the insulator away from the shoulder 18 in the sleeve bore after which the sleeve and ram descend together down the stationary ram 15 to compress the ceramic material. When pressing is complete, the upper ram 5 moves back up and the insulator is gripped by a bifurcated holder 9. The sleeve and table 7 which supports the holder move up whereby the pressed insulator is drawn off the pressing needle. The filling shoe is then moved into filling position causing the holder connected thereto to move over the edge of the table to drop the insulator 11 on to a conveyer.
