Abstract

A split die is used to mould a foot and stem, esp. where the stem is simultaneously attached to a bowl to make a goblet. The die rests on a stationary baseplate contg. an axial hole on the axis of a double-acting hydraulic cylinder (HC). Between HC and plate is a press assembly. Assembly contains a press cylinder forming a chamber for molten glass driven by a plunger up through hole into the die. After raising both cylinder and plunger, the surplus glass enters a chamber which includes a ring shearing off the surplus glass so it can easily be ejected before assembly is moved to a filling station for reloading chamber with molten glass. The completed goblet can be removed by opening the split die, without the surplus glass causing deformation of the goblet foot.
