Abstract

1383395 Isostatic moulding OLIN ENERGY SYSTEMS Ltd 6 March 1972 10386/72 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions F1 and B8] In an isostatic moulding apparatus, e.g. for moulding spark plug insulators, measured charges of moulding material are fed from a dispenser 48 to cavities 156 before an upper bolster 12 is lowered by an actuator, e.g. a piston 18 and projections 78 with mandrels 14 enter the cavities 156 and continued movement of the bolster 12 causes a bolster 22 to be pushed downwards and compress a fluid in an hydraulic intensifier 26 to act in annular chambers 148, via ports 136, to compress resilient mould linings 150, 154 and the material in the cavity. After a dwell period, the upper bolster is raised to withdraw the mandrels 14 and the moulded component from the cavities. During this movement, pistons (60) in the bolster 12, Figs. 6, 7, not shown, contact a fixed beam 13 to cause the mandrels 14 and sleeves (76) to rotate with respect to the projections 78 by means of pins (89) which engage camming slots (90), Fig. 5, not shown, and release the components, whereupon they slide down pivoted shoots 38 on to a conveyer 40.
