Abstract

826,013. Windscreen cleaners. DUDLEY, W. Feb. 4, 1957 [Feb. 2, 1956], No. 3268/56. Class 138(1). In an electrically driven windscreen wiper having an oscillating wiper arm mounted on the outer end 7 of a spindle 6 which has a gear wheel 8 on its inner end for engaging gearing in a gear box 5 driven by an electric motor, the gear box has a tapered hole 4 therein and the spindle is rotatably mounted in a bearing sleeve 1 having an externally tapered portion which is detachably fitted in said tapered hole in the gear box with said gear wheel in mesh with the gearing in the gear box. Sleeve 2, which may be integral with sleeve 1 or screwed thereto, passes through, and is attached to, the windscreen. In two modifications, (a) a bridgepiece connects the two sleeves and is formed with a side gap so that an additional wiper arm can be fixed to the spindle in the gap to clean the inside of the screen, Fig. 2 (not shown), and (b) the spindle is adapted to transmit the drive to a second wiper arm via a rack and pinion arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown).
