[Also in Groups XXII and XXIV] A surface grinding machine has a grinding wheel 28 carried by an internally splined sleeve 24 mounted on a splined shaft 22 driven through a flexible coupling 16 by a variable speed electric motor 10 mounted in the machine frame 12 which supports a table 37. The sleeve 24 is mounted by a bearing 30 in a housing 32 movable axially by a rack 41 thereon engaging a pinion 42 compounded with a worm wheel 44 meshing with a worm 46 on a spindle 48. A spindle 52 operated by handwheel 60 carries a friction pad which can be forced against the housing 32 to hold it in axially adjusted position.
