Abstract

350,524. Speedometers. DOUGLAS MOTORS, Ltd. and DIXON, F. W., Douglas Works, Hanham Road, Kingswood, Bristol. March 7, 1930, No. 7482. [Class 106 (iii).] An enclosed lubricated drive for a speedometer for a vehicle, e.g. a motorcycle, has a worm wheel 7 pressed into engagement with the hub 3, mounted through roller bearings 4 on a fixed spindle 5 carried by the front forks 6, by means of a screw 8 with a conical end 9 extending into a corresponding hole in a reduced portion of the worm wheel which is split radially at 10 in the plane of the conical hole and also transversely at 11 through substantially 180‹. The worm wheel 7 engages with a worm 15 supported on ball bearings 27 in a casing 14 and terminating in a non-circular spindle 28 adapted to receive a non-circular socket on a flexible driving member 30 mounted in a flexible sheath 31 the end of which is provided with a flange 32 held against the open end 16 of the casing 14 by means of a nut 33 screwed on to a thread on the open end 16. The other end of the sheath may be similarly arranged and connected to the indicator and the other end of the flexible driving member may terminate in a non-circular socket engaging a non-circular spindle of the indicator. A sleeve 34 acting between the flange 32 and thus the ball bearing 27 serves to locate the latter and the worm in the casing. A packing 21 of felt is provided and the outer end 19 of the casing is held in position against the end of an abutment in the form of a collar 25 on the hub spindle by means of a nut 26 screwed along the spindle, so that the angle at which the worm is disposed to the horizontal can be varied. With the above arrangement the worm and worm wheel are enclosed and may be packed with grease.
