Abstract

824,649. Valves. SEETRU Ltd. July 26, 1956 [July 26, 1955], No. 21572/55. Class 135. A rotary plug valve comprises a spherical valve member 1 within a two-part spherical housing 2, 3 with ports 10, 11. The valve member 1 is formed hollow with a diametrical tube 20 forming a passageway to align with the ports 10, 11 when in open position. When closed portions of the spherical surface of member 1 obturate the ports 10, 11 and to effect sealing in this position a toroidal sealing ring 23 or 24 of circular cross-section is provided in a groove 21 or 22 in the member 1 to surround the port 10 or 11. Alternatively the sealing rings could be provided in grooves in the spherical housing. The valve member 1 is adapted to be rotated by a spindle 27 inclined at an angle to the passageway 10, 11 and a spring detent 45 co-operates with recesses in the spindle to limit its movement and locate it in valve open and closed positions. A gland ring 31 is also provided on the spindle 27. In a modified construction the body is in one piece and the spindle is arranged at right angles to the passageway. After setting the valve member in the body it is secured by a removable cover screwed on to the body.
