Abstract
822,507. Impregnating wood for electric insulation. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1957 [Dec. 18, 1956], No. 38561/56. Class 140. [Also in Group XXXV] Wood is treated to render it satisfactory for use as an electrical insulating material by impregnating it in vacuo with a solution which comprises a tung oil-modified xylenol-formaldehyde resin in a solvent (e.g. xylene) and heating to remove the solvent and harden the varnish. The vacuum-impregnated wood may be subjected to pressure while still immersed in the varnish. The wood may be washed in a solvent to remove superficial varnish, after impregnation but before heating. The wood may be rock maple, birch or beech. Wooden slot wedges for dynamo-electric machines may be impregnated by the method of the invention. In an example such wedges are first impregnated, then washed in xylene and allowed to drain, then fitted into the stator of an induction motor. The whole stator is then immersed in the same type of varnish, withdrawn and baked.
