Abstract

752,406. Casting composite articles. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 28, 1954 [May 28, 1953], No. 15886/54. Class 83 (1). In making an electric rotor with cast-in windings, the laminated core is supported in a mould jacket of deformable heat-resistant material, e.g. silicone rubber, matted asbestos, or glass, to which external pressure is applied to cause it partially to enter the winding slots in the core. The laminated core 10 on an arbor 11 is supported between end members 15, 17 between which is also supported the deformable jacket 13 backed by arcuate metallic members 22. The arcuate members are forced inwardly as the end members are drawn together by bolts 21, to thereby force material of the jacket 13 partially into the slots 12. The cast winding will not therefore extend to the periphery of the laminations and finishing operations may be performed without forcing the metal of the winding between the laminations. The winding may be insulated from the core by applying insulating varnish or a clay wash to the sides of the slots before casting. The winding may be aluminium or magnesium.
