Abstract

823,964. Impregnated electric contact brushes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. June 18, 1957 [July 2, 1956], No. 20419/56. Class 140. Porous electric contact brush material has sodium pyrophosphate incorporated in it and contains also a subsequently introduced polyester resin polymerized to a substantially solid state in the brush, e.g. by the action of heat in the presence of a catalyst. The contact brush may consist of carbon, graphite or metalgraphite brush material. The sodium pyrophosphate may be incorporated in the brush material by impregnating the material with a solution of disodium hydrogen phosphate, drying and subsequently heat treating to convert it to the pyrophosphate. This impregnation may be carried out by boiling the brush in the solution or by vacuum-pressure means. An unsaturated polyester resin prepared from dipropylene glycol, maleic anhydride and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and dissolved in styrene and quinone may be used. Impregnation with the resin may be preceded by baking the brush and may be carried out by dipping or by vacuum-pressure means. Specifications 742,018 and 793,455 are referred to.
