Apparatus for determining the fluorescence of a sample S in ultra-violet light comprises alternative sources; mercury discharge lamp DL and filament lamp FL with associated lenses L1, L2 and ultra-violet filters UV1, UV2, and a photo-cell P connected to a galvanometer, the light falling on the photo-cell being varied by filters F1, F2, F3, &c. mounted on a rotatable wheel W.
