Abstract

894,573. Determining dimensions photoelectrically. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 20, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 19399/57. Class 40(3). In apparatus for determining variations in linear dimensions, e.g. the diameter of a moving rod, the rod 8 is scanned by light beams produced by a rotating disc 3 having a circle of holes 6 or spaced transparent sectors, the light passing the rod falling on a photo-cell 12 connected to a meter 15 via a capacitor 14 and amplifier 13. The spacing of the light beams is varied until the reading of the meter 15 is a minimum when the spacing is equal to the rod diameter. The spacing may be varied by moving the condenser lens system 2 and projection lens 7 or by interposing an adjustable disc with a spiral slot. In a modification, several circles of holes are provided in the disc 3. In another modification, the lamp 1 and disc 3 are replaced by a cathode ray tube with scanning beams.
