Abstract
1391064 Photo-electric position determining SIRA INSTITUTE 16 March 1972 [16 March 1971] 7033/71 Heading H4D The optical axis of a lens 7 is centred on the axis of a rotating cylindrical support 8 by forming a real image of an illuminated aperture in a mask 12 on the lens 7 by means of an additional apertured mask 13 (and possibly a lens 6), and adjusting the lens 7 on the support 8 to produce a zero output from a differential position sensitive photo-detector 10 responsive to said image and mounted below the lens 7. The output from the photo-detector 10 may be applied via a non-linear amplifier to a meter or a cathode-ray tube indicator. Each of the apertures in the masks 12 and 13 may comprise (a) a circular hole, (b) a slit or (c) a non-circular aperture having a straight edge component and suitable corresponding photo-detectors, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprise (a) four photo-sensitive quadrants with opposite quadrants connected differentially, (b) four such quadrants connected to function as two semicircular photosensitive areas and (c) a circular photo-sensitive area surrounded by a separate annular photosensitive area. The illumination source 5 may emit light, ultra-violet or infra-red radiation.
