Abstract
1429043 Light spot position detectors AVERY DENISON Ltd 6 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 27029/73 Heading G1A A vector quantity represented as the position of a light spot relative to an origin is measured by means of a photo-electrically sensitive area positioned to receive the light spot when the quantity is within a selected range of values. As shown, Fig. 1, an optical display instrument 1 in which a variable is represented by the position of a light spot on a display screen 2, is provided with a large area circular photo-detector 6 (e.g. a selenium cell) connected to an amplifier 9, a threshold circuit 10 and a relay 11 in a control circuit. When the light spot falls on the detector, indicating that the variable is within a given tolerence, the relay is operated. A beam-splitter may be positioned in the light path of a display instrument so that a measurement signal can be provided in addition to an unobscured display. The tolerence can be selected by adjusting the effective detection area using a lens and an aperture stop which may be an iris diaphragm. The system may form part of an optical balance in which light from a source is reflected from a mirror connected to the balance platform and mounted to pivot in all directions. This may be used to statically balance rotationally symmetrical objects. A plurality of concentric detectors may be utilized to provide a series of tolerence values and the annular areas may be divided into sectors to produce vector information.
