In an arrangement for the spectroscopic analysis of materials, light which is characteristic of the material and produced in a source 1 is dispersed by means of an optical system comprising a slit 2, lens 3 and prism 4 to form a spectrum, the lines of which are directed on to a photomultiplier 9 via different ones of a bank of slits 61 ... 6<SP>4</SP> and a rotating apertured disc 7, the apertures 8<SP>1</SP>. . . 84 of which are so arranged that light from each slit, in turn, falls on the photomultiplier, the output from which is supplied to different inputs of an indicating device 13 in step with the rotation of the disc.
