Abstract
906,033. Photo - electric fluid analysis. GRUBB PARSONS & CO. Ltd., Sir HOWARD. April 24, 1959 [May 6, 1958], No. 14453/58. Class 40 (3). In a gas or liquid analyser for determining the concentration or constituents of the fluid, radiation passing through a chamber containing the fluid sample is either varied cyclically in wavelength over a range of values or varied discretely and rapidly from one wavelength to another. The wavelengths are so chosen that the fluid sample has an absorption band at one frequency but substantially no effect at another. The effect on the radiation is determined photoelectrically. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, mirrors M1, M2 direct radiation from a source S on to a diffraction grating G and the diffracted radiation on to a photo-cell D. A cell C contains the test sample. The grating G is rocked between the positions AB, A<SP>1</SP>B<SP>1</SP> so that the spectral interval falling on the photo-cell D varies cyclically. The sample in the cell C will produce an absorption effect at some frequency in the range of wavelengths scanned across the photo-cell so that the photo-cell output will have a large alternating component. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the grating G is fixed and a transparent wedge is placed in the optical path and rotated at constant speed thereby to cause the angle of incidence on the grating to be varied. A third embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), uses a spherical mirror whose optical axis makes a small angle with a second axis about which the mirror is rotated to produce the variation in wavelength. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, discrete variation from one wavelength to another is obtained by rotating a slotted disc T in front of the radiation source S. As shown, two radiation beams are formed by use of a mask R, and the disc T allows one or other of these beams to pass to the fixed grating G and from thence to the detector D. In one modified form of Fig. 5 the mask R is omitted, and in other forms either mirror M4 or grating G is made in two parts at an angle to each other, a single source and slotted disc being used to pass radiation alternately on the two parts. An oscillating mirror can be used to obtain the variation in wavelength.
