Abstract
A process for forming a thin metallic film on a C.R.T luminescent screen includes the step of forming a nitrocellulose film, upon the surface of an aqueous liquid on a layer of luminescent powder, from a solution consisting of nitrocellulose, a plasticiser and a spreader liquid in a solvent composed of one or more acetates of aliphatic alcohols not higher than amyl alcohol, the nitrocellulose being of specified low viscosity grade and specified high nitration grade. The nitrocellulose film can be formed on water, and the plasticiser can be an alcohol phthalate such as dioctyl phthalate in specified proportions. The spreader liquid can consist of one or more lower aliphatic alcohols such as a mixture of methyl and ethyl alcohols with or without butyl alcohol in specified concentrations. The concentrations of the materials in the solution are such as to give from 0.005 to 0.015 mg. of nitrocellulose per sq. cm. of surface to be covered. The solution is introduced on to, but not below, the surface of the aqueous liquid by means of a pipette which can be of the kind described in Specification 800,346, [Group XXIX]. The solvent of the nitrocellulose is allowed to evaporate, the aqueous liquid is removed so that a film of nitrocellulose is deposited upon the luminescent powder, a thin layer of metal, e.g. aluminium, is applied to the nitrocellulose film and the nitrocellulose is then removed by heating.ALSO:A process of forming a nitrocellulose film upon an aqueous liquid on the luminescent screen of a cathode-ray tube utilizes a solution consisting of nitrocellulose, a plasticiser and a spreader liquid in a solvent composed of one or more acetates of aliphatic alcohols not higher than amyl alcohol, the nitrocellulose being of specified low viscosity grade and of specified high nitration grade. The plasticiser may be a phthalate such as dioctyl phthalate in specified proportions. The spreader liquid may consist of one or more lower aliphatic alcohols, such as a mixture of methyl and ethyl alcohols, with or without butyl alcohol, in specified concentrations. The concentrations of the materials in the solution are such as to give from 0.005 to 0.015 mg. of nitrocellulose per sq. cm. of surface to be treated. The solution is introduced on to, but not below, the surface of the aqueous liquid by means of a pipette, as described in Specification 800,346, [Group XXIX]. The solvent is allowed to evaporate and the aqueous liquid is removed.
