Abstract

A fluorescent screen for a cathode-ray tube is made by settling particles of a phosphor from a liquid suspension medium, e.g. water, on to the tube to form a fluorescent layer. A solution of a film-forming substance, e.g. nitro-cellulose in methyl-ethyl ketone, is then applied to the surface of the water, and the solvent is evaporated so as to leave a film of the nitro-cellulose on the water, which is then removed by siphoning or decanting so that the film is applied to the phosphor layer. The film is then coated with aluminium applied by evaporation and the screen is heated to decompose the film, the metal coating thus being applied to the phosphor.
