Abstract

701,867. Cathode-ray tubes. RAULAND CORPORATION. Dec. 28, 1951 [Dec. 29, 1950], No. 30284/51. Class 39(1) In a cathode-ray tube of the kind having a metal cone forming part of the envelope, the metal cone member is specially shaped to permit the formation of a metal backing layer for the fluorescent screen by the process described in Specification 645,633. In the embodiment shown the metal cone member 10 is formed at one end with an aperture 11 bounded by an inturned flange 12 which is sealed to a cylindrical glass neck 13 containing the electron gun of the tube. The other end of the cone is formed with an aperture 14 bounded by an outwardly directed flange 15 to which a glass face plate 16 for supporting the fluorescent screen is sealed. The process of forming the metal backing layer for the screen comprises spreading a solution of a synthetic resin and a plasticizer on the surface of a cushioning liquid and allowing a thin volatizable organic film to solidify, after which the cushioning liquid is decanted to permit the solidified film to lay evenly over the fluorescent screen. The metal layer is formed on the organic film and the film then removed by volatilization. The cone member 10 is shaped to provide a cylindrical portion 17 enclosing a transverse area substantially equal to that of the aperture 14. Hence, when the cushioning liquid is placed in the tube the surface of the cushioning liquid will have an area substantially equal to that of the screen surface on which the organic film is to be deposited. The solvent may be allowed to evaporate before decanting the cushioning liquid and the solidified organic film can be deposited directly over the fluorescent screen without tending to tear or stretch. The portion 17 of the cone member need not be exactly cylindrical and in an alternative construction corresponds to a frustum of a cone having an apex angle of not more than 10 degrees. Satisfactory results may also be obtained if the transverse area surrounded by the portion 17 is slightly greater than that of the aperture 14. The invention is also applicable to the so-called rectangular cones.
