Abstract
637,361. Electron microscopes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 14, 1945, No. 3668. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] An electron microscope comprises a readily removable field emission cold cathode 14, having a smoothly rounded tip which serves to support the specimen 20, and a fluorescent screen 12 between which and the cathode. an electric field is established, whereby a shadow image of the specimen is produced on the screen. The specimen may be embedded in a plastic film adhering to the cathode tip. The cathode is of tungsten and the tip may be rounded to a radius of 10<-4> cms. or less. A thin metal film for example of aluminium may be evaporated on the fluorescent screen. The specimen may be supported directly on the cathode tip, the field being applied to the cathode in negative pulses of short duration for producing the shadow image and in positive pulses of sufficient duration to permit discharging of the specimen to remove electrons collected during the negative pulses.
