Abstract

A coating composition for the cathode of an electron discharge device comprises a suspension of an electron emissive material in powder form in a solution of polyvinyl acetate in an organic solvent chosen from ketones, alcohols, esters, or hydrocarbons, or in a mixture of such solvents, and is applied by spraying. The coating is dried to remove the solvents of the binder, and after the device has been evacuated and sealed it is heated to decompose the polyvinyl acetate. An example of a coating composition is given as a suspension of 30 parts by weight of barium carbonate in a solution of one part by weight of polyvinyl acetate in 40 parts by weight of a mixture of equal parts of amyl acetate and methyl alcohol. Specification 275,542, [Class 39 (i), and U.S.A. Specification 1,828,545 are referred to.
