Abstract
650,730. Cathode materials and processing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., VAUSE, A. S., and BROADBANK, R. W. C. July 16,1947, No. 18985. [Class 39 (i)] Barium zirconate, with the addition of an alkaline earth carbonate, or thorium oxide, is used as the emissive material for a thermionic cathode. It is prepared from barium carbonate and zirconium oxide milled together with the additional substance, in a suitable binder such as diluted acetone or gum tragacanth, dried and extruded as a rod, subsequently hydrogen stoved, for insertion in a wire helix. Alternatively the reaction may be carried out without a binder, the product powdered and applied to the cathode by dipping or spraying in a suitable medium, afterwards evaporated. The reaction may be carried out in situ after the application of the materials.
