Abstract

699,751. Semi-conductor amplifiers. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS. Inc. Dec. 12, 1950, No. 30367/50. Class 40 (iv). An electronic valve comprises a sealed envelope containing two electrodes coated with compounds of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal which are in contact with each other, and with at least one probe similarly coated and sandwiched between the electrodes. Nickel electrodes 10, 12, having coatings as described, are in contact with each other, and two coated tungsten wire probes 18 are provided between the electrode coatings. Oxides and a mixture of the carbonates of barium, strontium and calcium, with or without barium fluoride, are given as examples of coating material and these may be applied by spraying or cataphoresis. The electrodes may also have a first coating of copper. The assembly is enclosed in a valve-type envelope, and after exhaustion and gettering an ageing process at about 800‹ C. may be employed for the electrodes. The device may be used as an amplifier, in which electrodes 10, 12 and 18 are used as cathode, anode and grid respectively, or electrodes 10 and 12 may be connected together and used as a cathode, the two probe wires 18 being used as the grid and the anode.
