Abstract
651,061. Discharge apparatus. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 16, 1948, No. 24365. Convention date, Sept. 20,1947. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device, such as an X-ray tube, comprising at least an anode and a cathode mounted within a glass envelope has an electrically conductive coating of a material containing indium provided on the inner surface of the envelope to prevent the accumulation of wall charges. The coating may be provided by spraying a solution of an indium compound, for example indium chloride in commercial alcohol in equal proportions by weight, the sensitivity of the coating being determined by selection of the proportional ratio of solvent and indium compound and/or by selection of the temperature of the portion of the envelope being sprayed ; the sensitivity may thus be varied between about 25 and 500 ohms. per square. The glass is preferably maintained at a temperature of about 500‹ C. whilst being sprayed. The X-ray tube shown in Fig. 1 comprises an anode 20 and cathode 13 in an envelope comprising glass sections 15 joined by metallic connector sleeves 18 which support focusing electrodes 21. The coating 22 of indium compound may be applied to the inner surface of all the glass envelope portions, or it may be sufficient to apply it only to the envelope portions adjacent the anode.
