Abstract
An aluminium backing is applied to a C.R.T. screen by forming synthetic resin film on water, decanting the water to apply the film to the screen, forming an aluminium coating on the film, and removing the film by heating, thereby applying the coating to the screen. The water surface is preferably treated with a cleaner such as amyl or butyl acetate, and after this has evaporated a few drops of resin solution such as nitrocellulose in a volatile solvent with a plasticizer, e.g. campher or dibutyl phthalate, are poured on the water to form a film. When the film has solidified the table is titled, at an even rate to decant the water, thereby allowing the film to settle on the screen. After drying the tube is evacuated and aluminium is evaporated to condense on the resin film. Heating at 375-700 DEG C. volatilises the nitrocellulose film leaving a thin uniform coating of aluminium on the screen. Detailed operational data is given.
