Abstract

The slippage characteristics of a film of a plasticized cellulose derivative are improved by moistening, e.g. coating or swabbing, one surface of the film with carbon tetrachloride or toluene, or a mixture of these liquids, drying the treated film, and buffing the dried surface. Preferably a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and toluene in the ratio of 70 to 30 by volume is used. The treated films will readily slip over one another or over polished metal surfaces without accumulating static electrical charges. The treatment may be applied to a cellulose derivative support film itself or to the cellulose derivative support side of a finished photographic film, e.g. motion picture film. The cellulose derivative may be a cellulose ester such as a nitrate, acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate, or acetate-propionate or other mixed cellulose ester. In an example, a cellulose acetate film support is wiped with cotton which has been moistened with carbon tetrachloride and is allowed to dry at room temperature. The dried strip is then buffed with felt until it becomes glossy. In another example, a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and toluene is sprayed on to one surface of a cellulose acetate-butyrate film base. After drying, the surface is buffed with felt.
