Abstract

A substratum having an irregular surface is coated by a method according to which a supply of material suitable for the purpose is blown out to form a thin bubble which is pressed against and attached to the substratum. Examples of suitable materials are glass, nitrocellulose and acetyl cellulose, while a plasticiser such as castor oil may also be present. The bubble may be formed from a material rendered viscous by heat treatment or by blowing a viscous solution of the material, specified solvents being ethyl and butyl acetates. The bubble may be adhered to the substratum by means of a binder previously applied, or by means of Van der Vaals forces only, e.g. by heating the substratum while pressure is being applied to the bubble. A subsequent layer may be applied to the coating and afterwards the bubble coating removed, e.g. by heating. A plurality of bubble layers may be applied.
