Abstract

An organic surface is prepared for silvering by applying thereto an organo-metal halide of the general formula RNMX4-N in which R represents a methyl, ethyl, or phenyl radical, M represents Si, Sn, Ti or Ge, X, a halogen, and n has a value of 1, 2 or 3. The coating of organo-metal halide is allowed to hydrolise in the atmosphere and is then treated with a reducible silver solution. A plastic surface, e.g., cellulose acetate, may be treated with dimethyl silicon dichloride before silvering and silver or another metal may be coated on the silver layer by electrodeposition.
