Abstract
In making a silica article, a shaped mould is coated with silicon tetrachloride or a silicon ester, e.g. ethyl-ortho-silicate, and the coating hydrolysed in the presence of the vapour of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid or ammonia to form a layer of silica, the mould being subsequently removed. Successive films of the silicon compound may be applied, continuously if desired, to the mould, each film being hydrolysed before a further film is applied. The method may be applied to form a seal between an insert, such as a metal lead or support wire, and a glass or vitreous part, by coating the insert with silica, introducing the coated insert into an aperture in the vitreous part and coating the parts with silica.ALSO:In making a silica article, a shaped mould is coated with silicon tetrachloride or a silicon ester e.g. ethyl ortho-silicate, and the coating hydrolysed in the presence of the vapour of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid or ammonia to form a layer of silica, the mould being subsequently removed. Successive films of the silicon compound may be applied, continuously if desired, to the mould, each film being hydrolysed before a further film is applied. The mould, which may be made of wax or metal, may be mounted on a rotatable shaft with the lower part of the mould immersed in the silicon compound whilst the upper part is exposed in air to the reacting vapour.
