Abstract
A method of coating a coiled cathode for an electric discharge tube with an electron-emissive material comprises applying to the cathode the desired amount of material dispersed in a liquid vehicle, and vibrating the cathode, e.g. at low audio frequency, while the material is being dried thereon by evaporation of the vehicle. The coating material may comprise by weight 55 per cent strontium carbonate and 45 per cent barium carbonate in nitrocellulose binder, the liquid vehicle being amyl acetate. Vibration is continued for 2 to 3 minutes. The coil is subsequently mounted in the tube and an electric current passed to convert the carbonates into oxides.
