Abstract
887,251. Discharge apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1960 [Nov. 12, 1959], No. 38372/59. Class 39(1) In a getter pump there is an outer electrode 1 Fig. 1 with a surface of gettering material and a rotationally symmetric wall and negatively biased to act as an ion collector with an axial anode electrode 4, and an electron gun 9 directs an electron beam tangentially into the box electrode 1 to produce ionising electrons. The upper surface of the box 1 has a gauze covering the box electrode serving as a cathode. The anode rod or wire 4 is of W or Ti or is a helix surrounding a getter. The walls of the box 1 may be of getter material, e.g. Zr or Ti or coated by evaporation with getters such as Ba. The axial electrode 4 is insulated by end bushes 5. If the box 1 is deeper, end walls need not be provided but it preferably has internal flanges. The box may be shaped as a motor tyre in which case the anode 4 is supported independently of the casing. The device is used with T.V. cameras, projection or colour tubes. Silicones may be used in the manufacture of the tubes. No magnetic field is required.
