Abstract

890,385. Discharge apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 21, 1960 [July 6, 1959], No. 23148/59. Class 39(1) In a method of making a discharge tube, a component 18 which is to be contained in the tube envelope 1 is inserted in a subsidiary chamber 11 which is connected to the tube envelope by a duct 12 having a cross-sectional area which is small compared with its length but which is large enough to allow the component to be passed along the duct. After evacuating chamber 11 and envelope 1, a vapour is introduced into chamber 11 so as to coat the surface of component 18 with a layer of a required material, the small crosssectional area of duct 12 preventing appreciable flow of the vapour into envelope 1. Finally the component is transferred along the duct into envelope 1 and the duct is sealed off at a point adjacent the envelope. As shown, component 18 is the photo-cathode of an image-intensfying tube and is coated on one side with X-ray sensitive luminescent material from container 24 and on the other side with a caesiated-antimony layer from containers 19, 21. The method of the invention may also be used in the formation of photo-conductive or secondary-electron-emissive coatings. Metal flap 15 having been swung away from aperture 14, component 18 is moved from holder 17 to holder 31 by means of a ferromagnetic bar 26 and an external magnet. A second electrode 32 may be coated in a second subsidiary chamber connected to envelope 1 by duct 34. Before any heat-sensitive components are transferred from their subsidiary chambers into the envelope, the envelope and its remaining components may be baked at a high temperature.
